Hiking “Off the Beaten Path”

There are so many local trails to suit your time schedule and your hiking abilities that you may just have to come back for another casa visit! Here are a few we find very accessible and put you in touch with that “Colorado mountain high” we dream of…

Bear Creek Trail- head towards Telluride on Hwy 145 to mile marker 34-ish (about 35 minutes from the casa) and a forest service sign will point to the parking lot entry. You will cross a bridge over the Dolores river where there is a nice rocky beach for the kidos to play around on while you lounge back listening to the constant burble of the rippling waters. For those who want the hiking experience, the first part of the adventure will get you breathing a bit as you climb up through the aspens and pines. But in 15-20 minutes things start weaving around and down towards the riverbed, through a few open fields and forestation again. You can go for many miles, so gauge your strength and time frame so you can get back for a glorious evening sunset at the casa.

Hillside Drive- further up Hwy 145 at mile marker 38-ish is a turn off for a beautiful climb in your vehicle to a higher vista point.  Or just in,  past your crossing the river, on your left,  is a small parking pull-out for the Rio Lado Trail.  It is unique for its small running streams feeding the lower Dolores River.  You can hop over these and have the joy of listening to it gurgle along your way.  It is not a demanding hike and can be completed in a few hours…

Roaring Fork- near Hillside Drive also and connects into The Colorado Trail;  fantastic views…
